VIDEO: China launches technology that allow smartphone users control the devices with their eyes

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honour has introduced a new AI eye-tracking technology that can pinpoint exactly where you are looking on the screen.

When the phone recognises the difference between a fleeting glance and a deliberate stare, it will execute the action without requiring physical contact.

The technology, dubbed “Magic Capsule,” will be accessible “soon” on the company’s new Magic 6 Pro.

Honour claims to be the first company to allow customers to control their gadgets with their eyes, although tech companies are constantly searching for new ways to do so, ranging from voice instructions to hand gestures.

It has been used for many years to assist determine the optimal way to engage users in sectors like advertising and market research.

However, there have been significant barriers to employing it outside of controlled situations up until this point, mostly related to the required sophistication of AI.

On the other hand, Honour claims that its latest Magic Capsule technology can “identify the intent” in addition to tracking the user’s gaze.

Before anything else, users must calibrate their eyes by focussing at different locations on the screen, much like how they would set up their fingerprint.

Once configured, the AI can identify a person’s gaze location from a distance of 20 to 50 cm.

The user must remain staring at the location for 1.8 seconds in order to demonstrate “intent.”

During a demo at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the business demonstrated how users may quickly glance at the screen to switch off a timer, access text messages, or accept or reject a call.
