VIDEO: How Police arrested couple taking child to school demanded to pay ₦500K

While traveling to drop off their infant at school, a Nigerian couple has accused Owerri, Imo State, police officers of extortion, abuse, and arbitrary arrest.

The woman described how she and her husband were subjected to police abuse in a TikTok video. She claims that the school bus was meant to pick up their child, but because it was broken, they chose to drive the infant themselves.

She requested that her husband pull over at the side of the road so she could buy food. Her spouse was forcibly arrested without cause by individuals posing as police officials when a car drew up next to them while they were parked.

The officers told her to follow them to the station even though she tried to stop them. They came back a few moments later and took her into custody as well.

She claimed that while her detained husband looked on helplessly, she was verbally and physically assaulted repeatedly inside the police car for questioning their behavior.

According to reports, the officers demanded for ₦500,000 for bail, but after her husband begged, they agreed to pay ₦150,000. Nevertheless, the officers allegedly took away their car key and departed even after getting the money.

The couple got on a motorcycle and rode after the officers, determined to get their key back. One of the cops tried to arrest the woman when they saw her, but she escaped and took refuge at a nearby car wash as her husband called for assistance.

The woman denounced the police officers in her tearful video, calling them “wicked” and “thieves.”

Many Nigerians have expressed their dissatisfaction about instances of police violence and extortion in response to the viral film. The accusations have not yet received a response from authorities.
