Hamas has been accused by the family of purposefully starving 24-year-old Israeli hostage Evyatar David as part of a propaganda operation.
While visiting the Nova Music Festival in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, David was kidnapped and has been held captive ever since.
David is shown digging what he says is his own burial in a tunnel while clearly undernourished, according to new video evidence made public by Hamas. He states in the video: “I haven’t eaten in days. I barely got drinking water.”
In a public statement, his family reacted: “We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas’s tunnels in Gaza — a living skeleton, buried alive.”
Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli minister of national security, denounced the video as an attempt to influence and coerce Israel. Western officials and the Red Cross have demanded that all hostages be released immediately and that humanitarian relief channels be opened into Gaza.
In response, Hamas said it would only let the delivery of food and medication to hostages if airstrikes were stopped and humanitarian routes into Gaza were permanently allowed.
The captive video’s release coincides with an increase in global alarm about Gaza’s deteriorating humanitarian situation. Images of Palestinian children who are critically emaciated have gone viral, drawing attention to what humanitarian organizations are increasingly referring Palestine as a famine.
According to the UN, during the final week of July, starvation claimed the lives of dozens of individuals, including children. Many slumped in the streets while looking for food, according to aid agencies.
When Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd assembled at a humanitarian assistance delivery point in Gaza on July 30, the situation became more heated. Local health officials report that hundreds of Palestinians were hurt and 73 people were killed. As the injured were being transported from the scene, witnesses reported seeing flour and blood combine.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that soldiers felt intimidated while supervising assistance activities and that the shot happened in self-defense. The military stressed that it is dedicated to assisting humanitarian deliveries in cooperation with international organizations and that it does not purposefully target people.
Local NGOs, such as the Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO), have criticized Israel for allegedly converting assistance locations into “killing grounds” and focusing on people during their most vulnerable times.
49 Israelis are still in Gaza after Hamas abducted 251 of them on October 7, 2023. According to Israeli sources, at least 27 of them have died.
Global demands for an immediate ceasefire, the release of prisoners, and unhindered access to supplies are still being fueled by the hostage situation and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
