Tina Uyi, a 54-year-old entrepreneur from Italy, narrowly avoided death early on New Year’s Day after her 55-year-old ex-husband, Osaro Ahunwan, allegedly set her Edo State home on fire.

The event happened in Benin City’s Isihor village on Iduomwina Street, off Tipper Road.

Tina is still undergoing treatment at an unidentified private hospital in Benin City after suffering third-degree burns in the incident.

According to reports, the victim lost a significant amount of money in both local and foreign currencies, including packages sent by her Italian friends to their Nigerian loved ones, and she also lost her travel documents.

An eyewitness claims that on December 31, 2024, Tina, who had just returned to Nigeria from her base in Italy, heard a loud bang on her window while coming out from the bathroom.

According to the eyewitness, Tina found out after questioning that it was her ex-husband Osaro who had allegedly smashed the window and demanded to enter her flat.

Because her family had been returning her bride price since April 2024, she allegedly refused to let her ex-husband inside her flat, claiming that their relationship was over.

Osaro allegedly threatened to burn down Tina’s flat and hurt its residents because he was furious that she wouldn’t let him inside her home.

“Despite Tina’s plea for him to leave the promises, Osaro reportedly shattered the glass windows, doused the apartment with Petrol, and set it on fire through the help of a lighter and fuel, leaving the entire apartment completely razed.

“The inferno quickly engulfed the building, but neighbours intervened and successfully rescued Tina’s elderly parents (who are nonagenarians) from the flames,” the eyewitness narrated.

“It took the frantic efforts of men of the Edo State Fire Service to put out the flames that wreaked havoc before their arrival”, the source said.

Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune from her hospital bed, Tina described how Osaro allegedly threatened to kill both her and himself at some point in 2023.

“Osaro destroyed my Lexus(330) Jeep when we had a misunderstanding. He likes too much control and is very suspicious; even when I am out shopping and he calls, as soon as he hears a male’s voice, he abuses me and calls me names,” she narrated.

“So because of his violent and overbearing character, I decided to quit the marriage that lasted less than 2 years”

According to information obtained, the suspect and his accomplice, Tina’s older brother Odaro Ovia Robo, have been taken into custody by the Ekiadolor police.

The publication claims that Osaro admitted during questioning that Tina’s older brother, Odaro Oviarobo, also referred to as “OD,” gave him comprehensive details regarding his sister’s (Tina) return schedule.

He allegedly acknowledged that he had paid Odaro N5,000 (five thousand naira) for information and disclosed that he had concealed the petrol canister in Odaro’s residence.

The suspect further stated that Odaro provided the lighter that was used to start the fire.

According to sources, Odaro harboured resentment against his sister, accusing her of refusing to provide financial support even after building a hotel.

Odaro willingly returned to Nigeria after ten years, leaving behind his partner and a newborn girl, despite Tina having previously supported his move overseas in 2003.

He has apparently been unemployed and dependent on Tina for financial support ever since he returned.

SP Moses Yamu, the Edo State Command spokesperson, confirmed the occurrence and stated that Osaro and Odaro are still being held by the police while the investigation is ongoing.
