VIDEO: Man arrested and jailed for wearing slippers

A Nigerian man has revealed the startling tale of how he was detained and given a one-year prison sentence because of a pair of slippers.

The man described his experience in a widely shared video on X (previously Twitter), detailing how a carefree night out devolved into a nightmare.

He claims that the incident took place on January 6, 2024. He received an invitation to a birthday celebration from a buddy after work.

On their way back, his fuel ran out, so he and his friend went to a nearby house where a woman sold petrol.

He was unaware that his friend’s footwear had just ripped when the woman came out and sold them the fuel.

Rather than telling him, the friend grabbed a pair of the woman’s son’s slippers that had been left outside and began to leave.

The woman called for assistance as soon as she saw them and accused them of stealing. After that, her husband called the police, who came and took them into custody.

They believed it was a trivial matter and spent three days in police custody before receiving a prison term.

In the video, he recounted his experience, saying: “I drive Keke. On January 6, 2024, I closed from work, and a friend invited me to a birthday party. So, I carried him there.”

“On our way back, my fuel finished, so I asked my friend to follow me to buy some from a woman in the area.”

“After buying the fuel, my friend’s slippers got damaged, but he didn’t tell me. He just took the slippers at the front of the house, which belonged to the woman’s son.”

“As we were leaving, the woman called us back and realized what happened. I apologized, but she refused to listen and started calling us thieves.”

“I stayed back, begging and explaining that it wasn’t intentional while cautioning my friend. But before I knew it, her husband called the police, and we were arrested.”

“We spent three days at the station, thinking it was a small matter, only to end up in prison.”
