VIDEO: Police use teargas on protesters at Lekki tollgate in Lagos.

At the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, police used tear gas canisters to scatter protesters.

On Thursday, a nationwide protest staged by youths against the skyrocketing cost of living got started.

Protesters marched into Lagos, Nigeria’s business hub, starting in Ikeja, Ojota, and Lekki. Protests are also occurring in isolated areas of the city.

The spot, which was the subject of a “massacre” during the 2020 anti-police brutality rallies, was not one of the authorised locations for the protest, thus the police had advised the demonstrators against gathering at the tollgate.

The Lagos state administration obtained a court order on July 30 that limited protesters to Peace Park, Ketu, and Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota.

The Lagos High Court’s Emmanuel Ogundare, presiding over an ex parte motion brought forth by the state’s attorney general Lawal Pedro, issued the restriction order.

In Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja, protesters have also been targeted by tear gas fired by police.

Since President Bola Tinubu abolished the system of petrol subsidies and unified the forex windows in 2023, inflation in Nigeria has skyrocketed.
