According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, or NNPCL, the new refinery in Port Harcourt is more than 90% finished.
Mele Kyari, the NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, made this statement during a visit to the facility in Rivers State on Monday by labour leaders from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
ZINGTIE recalls that NNPC eventually turned on the 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) phase one of the Port Harcourt oil refinery after a protracted delay that included at least seven missed deadlines.
After the federal government obtained a $1.5 billion contract to repair the facility, which had been abandoned for years, the restoration work for the entire 210,000 bpd refinery started in 2021.
In violation of international best practices, NNPC first neglected to disclose the number of gallons of petrol, diesel, jet fuel and naphtha that the refinery would produce.
The national oil firm later claimed to be refining 1.4 million gallons of petrol per day, which is a remarkably low amount by any measures, blaming public outcry.
