in 2 a.m. on Friday, December 6, members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) broke into the home of Mr. Ugochukwu Ezeanyagu, an Abia businessman, and his 8-month-pregnant wife in Umuobia Olokoro Estate in the state capital, Umuahia, sending him to the hospital.
The husband told ABN TV that in order to forcibly enter their room, the heavily armed EFCC officials—some of whom were wearing masks—broke down the doors and used a hammer to smash through the gates of their house.
He claimed that the officials humiliated him and his very traumatised pregnant wife by making them lie face down in a way that portrayed them as armed robbers because they did not specify their purpose or the authority behind their actions.
His phone and other electronic devices were confiscated by the authorities while the horrific ordeal was still going on, reportedly to check for any suspicious transaction histories.
The EFCC agents reportedly apologised for the damages caused and left the location after failing to locate any proof connecting the businessman to online fraud.
“The most painful part is that my wife is over 8 months pregnant. They threw her into crisis last night, with the whole shock and trauma, ” Ezeanyagu stated.
An formal police complaint has not yet been filed as of the time of this article.
ZINGTIE’s attempt to get a reaction from Mr. Dele Oyewale, the EFCC Head of Media & Publicity, was unsuccessful.
