According to Israeli military drone footage from Gaza, Sinwar is seen sitting alone himself in a chair in a shelling-damaged room with a seriously injured arm. Note: some viewers may find the scenes in the video distressing.
Drone film published by the Israeli military purports to capture Hamas commander Yahya Sinwar’s last moments: he is sitting stooped in a dust-covered chair, his head and face hidden by a scarf, and he is alone in a destroyed Gaza flat with the walls torn out by shelling.
The footage shows Sinwar throwing a stick over his head towards the oncoming drone, his right arm seeming badly injured. The video has not been independently confirmed by The Guardian.
According to Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari, Sinwar was only recognised as a fighter at the time the video was filmed. The structure collapsed as a result of the military firing another shell at it, killing him, Hagari claimed. According to him, Sinwar was discovered in possession of 40,000 shekels ($10,707), grenades, and a bulletproof vest.
The Jerusalem Post claims that Hagari told reporters: “Sinwar fled alone into one of the buildings. Our forces used a drone to scan the area, which you can see here in the footage I’m presenting.”
“Sinwar, who was injured in his hand by gunfire, can be seen here with his face covered, in his final moments, throwing a wooden plank at the drone,” he said.
“He tried to escape and our forces eliminated him.”
Regarding Sinwar’s death, Hamas has remained silent.
Images that went viral online showed the body of a man who looked like Sinwar, partially buried in the wreckage of a building that had been destroyed, wearing a military vest and with a large wound on his head.
According to Israeli officials, Sinwar was discovered on Wednesday by infantry forces scouring the Tal El Sultan neighbourhood in southern Gaza, where they thought senior members of Hamas were located.
Sinwar fled into a destroyed building during the battle that broke out after the troops opened fire after spotting three suspected terrorists moving between buildings.
Sinwar, the primary planner of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza War, seems to have stopped using phones and other communication devices in the final months of his life, which would have made it more difficult for Israel’s potent intelligence services to find him.
According to Israeli sources, they thought he was hiding in one of the many tunnels that Hamas had dug under Gaza over the previous 20 years, but as more and more have been discovered by Israeli forces, even the tunnels were no assurance that he would not be apprehended.
According to the military, intelligence services had been looking for Sinwar for months and had been progressively limiting his operating area. DNA testing, fingerprints, and dental records all contributed to the definitive confirmation of Sinwar’s death.
