In Anambra State, a drama is developing due to the arrest of a well-known native doctor from Nnewi, Aka Mmuo Mmiri, who is also referred to as De Young Chief Priest or Mmuo Mmili Afulu Anya.

Recently, the traditionalist—whose actual name is thought to be Johnpaul Ezenagu—was detained by Agunechemba Security Outfit, a state security organization, in an operation aimed at suspected ritualists.

It has been reported that security operatives stormed his home and subsequently transported him to a river thought to be his shrine. He is accused by authorities of engaging in unlawful spiritual practices, such as conducting rituals for internet scammers referred to as Yahoo boys, and allegedly supplying counterfeit money and other charms thought to facilitate criminal actions.

The native doctor who was arrested has, however, vehemently rejected the accusations.

During his parade, Aka Mmuo Mmiri emphasized that he is a legitimate traditional practitioner and not engaged in any criminal activities. He claims to be properly registered and licensed by the State.

“I have the registration and license issued to traditionalists in Anambra State, even before the current law introduced by the Governor,” he said.

He also stated that his reputation in the Nnewi community is self-evident.

“If I were involved in crime, the people of Nnewi would have chased me away long ago. The community does not support evil,” he added.

As a means of further self-defense, he disclosed the presence of surveillance cameras positioned inside and outside his home to keep an eye on what was happening in the vicinity.

“I don’t harbor criminals and I have no dealings with them,” he stated.

During his defense, the native doctor made a bold statement that sparked controversy, claiming that some religious leaders are responsible for even greater deception.

“There are many churches and fake pastors committing more crimes and deceiving people in Anambra State,” he said.

His statements have sparked a heated online debate, particularly in the context of Charles Soludo’s administration’s vigorous efforts to eliminate criminal elements from the State via the Anambra Homeland Security Law and actions performed by the Agunechemba security team.

Over the past few weeks, a number of traditional healers have been detained on suspicion of helping criminals with charms, rituals, and other spiritual methods thought to promote fraud and violence.

However, critics contend that the crackdown seems to target mainly traditionalists while overlooking purported fraudulent practices in certain religious circles, such as staged miracles, the marketing of “anointed” products like olive oil and healing water, and prophecies that guarantee rapid riches to desperate adherents.

As authorities persist in probing the actions of the detained traditionalist, the case has continued to provoke public responses.
