Weeks before her wedding, a young woman has ignited online debate by disclosing her reasons for contemplating canceling the ceremony.

Awesome Family shared the story on Facebook, detailing her shock upon discovering a troubling “family tradition” that her fiancé expects her to participate in before marriage.

As she saw it, all was going well: the preparations were set, anticipation was mounting for the ceremony.

During a discussion with her fiancé regarding their future, however, circumstances changed radically. What she first believed was a joke proved to be a genuine expectation.

She clarified that her fiancé informed her of a tradition in his family, where it is expected that his father will physically “verify” her purity the night before the wedding, in the presence of other male relatives.

She was shocked and deeply uncomfortable by the revelation, questioning the notion of being subjected to such an act for the sake of tradition.

In her words:

“I’m sitting here staring at my wedding dress, and for the first time in months, I don’t feel like a bride. I feel like a stranger in my own life. My wedding is exactly two weeks away… my heart was so full until last night.

…He looked me in the eyes and told me that the night before the wedding, his father… has to physically ‘verify’ my purity… My fiancé and other male relatives are expected to be there to witness it.

…I asked him, ‘Are you hearing yourself? You want me to be humiliated like that?’… He said it’s a mark of honor… and that if I truly loved him, I would ‘submit’ to this one final hurdle… a ‘small sacrifice’.

…Now, the ‘perfect’ man is at my door… begging and crying… but is this really a ‘small thing’? How can everything be ‘perfect’ if my dignity is the price…?

…If I say yes, I lose myself. If I say no, I might lose the man I love. What should I do? Is this a tradition worth keeping, or is this a red flag I can’t ignore?”

The account has provoked intense responses on the internet, as numerous individuals denounce the supposed custom and call on the woman to put her safety and self-respect first.
