Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced on Friday that Kyiv has begun exploring ways to monitor a potential ceasefire along its 1,300 km-long frontline in the ongoing war with Russia. He also revealed that a team would be formed to evaluate how to effectively monitor any truce.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept a ceasefire proposal that the United States negotiated with Ukraine.

Putin expressed support for the plan in principle on Thursday but outlined several conditions, indicating that Moscow would not quickly agree, which has raised doubts in Kyiv.

“To prevent any potential provocations from the Russian side, we must be prepared,” Sybiha said.

The Ukrainian minister was part of a delegation that recently met with American officials in Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that Kyiv backs Washington’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the full-scale invasion that Russia launched three years ago.

Sybiha noted that monitoring a ceasefire would be challenging, referencing Ukraine’s negative experiences with truces under the German- and French-backed Minsk process, which aimed to address the insurgency supported by Russia in eastern Ukraine since 2014.

A survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, published on Friday, revealed that 50% of respondents opposed ceding any territory in exchange for peace and a guarantee of independence, a slight decrease from 51% in December. In contrast, 39% of respondents were in favor of such a concession.
