They also bemoaned the unclean drinking water, the lack of meat in their meals, and the nonpayment of allowances.

The food given to Nigerian soldiers serving in the North West, which includes Katsina and Zamfara states, as part of Operation Fansan Yamma, has been denounced as poisonous and inedible, claiming that even a street child would not voluntarily consume it.

They also bemoaned the unclean drinking water, the lack of meat in their meals, and the nonpayment of allowances.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, one of the troops described their experience. “The food is so bad that even Almajiri can’t eat it with happiness, I swear,”he said.“That’s not food, that is poisonous and disgusting. It is also without meat and tasteless.”

Despite their sacrifices in the fight against robbers, he denounced their treatment. “We are fighting bandits, risking our lives, but unfortunately, we are suffering. Poor feeding, non-payment of our allowances as at when due.”

He said the hardship has continued for more than two years and six months, making many soldiers consider quitting the military.

“That is what we are passing through for over two years and six months. That makes many soldiers consider leaving the job because of this treatment.”

Additionally, he voiced worries about the water they drink, pointing out that its source is dangerously near restrooms. “It is not up to 20 metres away from the toilet and bathroom. There is a possibility of toilet water linking to the borehole.”

Expressing his disgust, he added,“I always tell our people that the water may have its way back to the underground water of the borehole… Very disgusting.”

“Thank God they are sharing the food now.”

He insisted that the fundamental problems of inadequate food, unpaid allowances, and contaminated drinking water still exist and have an impact on the morale of the soldiers fighting banditry in the area.

The same soldiers from Operation Fansan Yamma, North West, had previously complained to SaharaReporters about the military’s inability to rotate them, claiming a lack of funding.

Originally slated for a six-month deployment, the troops have now been on the frontlines for two years and six months without being permitted to leave.

The soldiers claim they are frequently informed that there are no funds to enable their return, even though they are past due for redeployment. Many of them are tired and depressed since they haven’t seen their family in years.

“About the ill-treatment, we are facing here in Operation Fansan Yamma North West. And the most important thing is that we are due for rotation from the operation but up till now, they keep telling us no funds to change us back and see our family,” one of the affected soldiers had lamented.
