The United States will no longer be responsible for the majority of international humanitarian aid, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Friday.

In the wake of an earthquake that devastated sections of Myanmar, he also urged other wealthier countries to take action.

“We’re not the government of the world. We’ll provide humanitarian assistance, just like everybody else does, and we we’ll do it the best we can. But we also have other needs we have to balance that against,” Rubio said.

ZINGTIE remembers that on his first day in office, President Donald Trump issued an order to halt all US foreign aid for 90 days.

Global humanitarian relief efforts have been thrown into disarray as a result of that action and the stop-work orders that followed, which have stopped several US Agency for International Development programs globally.

As Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk continue their historic drive to reduce the size of the federal government, USAID has been largely decimated, with many of its grants being discontinued and many of its employees being placed on leave or let go.

Rubio stated that many wealthy nations should contribute to humanitarian efforts worldwide and that it was unrealistic to expect the United States to cover 60–70% of them.

He mentioned India and China in particular.

“We are the richest country in the world, but our resources are not unlimited. They are not unlimited, and we have a massive national debt. We have many other priorities as well and it’s time to recalibrate all of that. So we’ll be there. We’ll be helpful as much as we can. We’ve got other things we have to take care of as well.

“China is a very rich country. India is a rich country. There are a lot of other countries in the world, and everyone should pitch in,” he said
