Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has criticized the United Kingdom for what he characterized as a belated proposal of military aid in the ongoing Iran conflict. He asserted that Washington no longer needs assistance, having already secured an advantage.
While responding to news that Britain was weighing the option of sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East, Trump commented on Saturday in a post on his Truth Social platform.
In his address to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the president of the U.S. implied that the proposed assistance was not timely.
“The United Kingdom, our once great ally, maybe the greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East,” Trump wrote.
“That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer, but we will remember. We don’t need people that join wars after we’ve already won.”
The statement came after the British Ministry of Defence confirmed that the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales had been placed on a higher level of operational readiness, thereby reducing the time needed for deployment if necessary.
Nevertheless, British officials specified that this action does not automatically imply that the warship will be dispatched to the Middle East; it may still be utilized for other planned duties, such as NATO drills.
While talking to journalists on Air Force One, Trump reaffirmed his stance, contending that support from the British would have been more beneficial earlier in the conflict.
“We don’t need them. It’s not the right time. It would have been nice to have had them two weeks ago,” he said.
In the meantime, the president of the United States made his way to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware in order to participate in a dignified transfer ceremony for six American service members who lost their lives during the conflict in Kuwait.
As military personnel transported the remains from the aircraft, Trump saluted in front of the flag-draped coffins of the fallen soldiers during the solemn event.
The president characterized the moment as “a very sad day,” yet he defended the ongoing military campaign against Iran, asserting that the United States was decisively winning the war.
Trump also ignited controversy with his remarks regarding Iran’s political future, implying that Washington should help decide who leads the country next in order to avert renewed conflict.
“We don’t want to come back every five or ten years and do this again. We want to pick a president that’s not going to lead the country into war,” he said.
He added that the U.S. has no intention of involving Kurdish armed groups in the conflict, as the administration aims to avoid further complicating the war.
