The Nigeria Police in Ondo State arrested a suspected thief in an incident that garnered public attention. The suspect reportedly fell asleep inside a house he had allegedly broken into while attempting to steal, in Owo, Ondo State.
As per reports, the incident took place on August 5, 2018, when the suspect purportedly entered a home with the aim of committing theft. During the operation, he allegedly fell into a deep sleep inside the victim’s house, which led to his eventual arrest.
Residents reported that the homeowner found the suspect sleeping inside the building and promptly notified neighbors and security authorities. The suspect was taken into custody by police officers who responded to the scene.
It has been reported that during the arrest, officers discovered that the suspect was in possession of 400 milligrams of Tramadol. Tramadol, a prescription medication frequently used to relieve pain, has seen widespread abuse in Nigeria and other nations because of its psychoactive effects when consumed in large doses.
As stated in police reports from that period, the suspect seemed to be either deeply asleep or unconscious—something many onlookers thought might be connected to drug use.
The arrest’s unusual nature attracted public attention after images circulated of the suspect still asleep while being paraded by police officers. Eyewitnesses to the event characterized the situation as astonishing and confusing.
Later, the authorities confirmed that the suspect was in custody and still exhibiting signs of prolonged sleep or severe drowsiness.
Sadly, the situation became more sinister when, following his arrest about a week earlier, the suspect was reported to have died on August 13, 2018.
At that time, authorities suggested that inquiries would be carried out to establish the precise reason for death.
Reports, however, implied that the suspected use of drugs could have contributed to his medical condition.
The incident highlighted the escalating issue of Tramadol misuse, especially among the youth in Nigeria. In the past few years, security agencies have issued multiple warnings regarding the risks associated with the misuse of this drug, which is occasionally trafficked or sold without authorization.
According to health experts, taking Tramadol in large amounts without medical supervision can result in serious side effects such as extreme drowsiness, respiratory issues, seizures, and even death in some cases.
After the incident, public health advocates and authorities reiterated their demands for enhanced regulation and awareness concerning the improper use of prescription medications.
