After a high-level Iftar dinner at the State House in Abuja on Monday night, President Bola Tinubu’s message to governors has been made public.

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, and Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), joined the president in breaking their fast.

At the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu also welcomed more governors, ministers, and heads of ministries, divisions, and agencies (MDAs).

The President has a long-standing yearly custom of breaking the fast with governors, ministers, heads of MDAs, and security officers during the month of Ramadan.

Speaking to state governors, Tinubu urged them to step up efforts to implement policies and initiatives that directly help the weak and impoverished members of society.

“Continue doing what you are doing. And do more for the people,” the president said, stressing that governors must put their constituents’ welfare first.

Tinubu reminded the governors that he compared their duty to “fetching water from a dry well” during his initial meeting with his cabinet, acknowledging the difficulties of governing.

But instead of burdening the populace, he assured them that his administration was dedicated to making sure that resources were used for development.

“We are still working hard to ensure that there is water to drink and that we spend money, not the people. You, the leaders at the subnational levels, are also doing all you can to spend money, not the people,” he stated.

In order for governors to perceive themselves as “navigators” guiding Nigeria toward development and prosperity, the president asked them to have a long-term vision for their states.

“Look at yourselves as navigators that will bring the country to the promised land,” Tinubu said.

Beyond governance, Tinubu urged the governors to stand together, reminding them that Nigeria is still one large family in spite of ethnic and religious divisions.

He emphasized that in order to achieve long-term peace and growth, leaders must promote national togetherness.
