Political analyst and security expert Salihu Mahmud has issued stern warnings regarding speculation about the potential replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an interview with Trust TV, Mahmud warned that replacing Shettima with any northern Christian candidate “could spell doom for the president,” pointing out that the support for such alternatives is mainly unproven outside their home areas.
He elucidated that the success of elections in Nigeria is often contingent on established political networks and voter structures, which a new candidate may not possess.
Mahmud emphasized that being popular in a region does not guarantee popularity on a national scale. He stated that sudden alterations to the presidential ticket could disturb devoted supporters and undermine meticulously established political alliances, especially within northern voting blocs where voter behavior is shaped by historical connections and credibility.
He emphasized that strategic decisions ought to concentrate on measurable political strength rather than symbolic tweaks, cautioning that there are considerable electoral risks associated with experimentation at the vice-presidential level.
