According to Dare Glintstone Akinniyi, the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Youth Group, Governor Sim Fubara’s leadership of the PDP in Rivers state is typical.

The court’s presiding judge, Justice Stephen Jumbo, declared the PDP’s ward, local, and state government congresses to be invalid in his ruling.

Akinniyi stated that after the state high court’s ruling, the PDP would once again enjoy peace in Rivers state. This meant that Governor Fubara would succeed FCT Nyesom Wike as the party’s leader in Rivers.

“There is no State in Nigeria at the moment where the Governor is not in charge of the state party chapter, so why is Rivers State different?” Akinniyi remarked.

“It’s a norm for the Governor to be the Leader of his party, in his state, and with the new development from the High Court, I think peace will return to Rivers State PDP.”

The PDP chieftain further asserted that the struggle for power between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, was the reason the party lost the Rivers local government elections.

He maintained that Governor Fubara needed to be in charge of Rivers State PDP to ensure unity.

“It’s our prayer that Governor Sim Fubara is fully in charge of the structure. You will recall that we lost the LG elections due to the battle of supremacy between the ex-Gov and his successor.

“Governor Fubara should and must be in charge of Rivers State PDP, as it is the practice everywhere. With this development, those who are hell-bent on sharing powers with the Governor can take a chill pill.

“PDP can’t afford to lose Governor Fubara and by extension Rivers State. So we are in support of anything that will sustain his administration and that of our great party – PDP.“

It has been claimed that the PDP secretariat on Aba Road in Port Harcourt has been taken over by Governor Fubara’s group.

Any attempt by Fubara’s faction to seize the party would be a crisis, according to Wike’s camp.
