The Acting Vice Chancellor of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo State, Prof. Samuel Akintunde, has appealed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to release funds to 995 students who have applied for the loan but have yet to receive it. The total amount expected is N68,316,200, excluding the N20,000 monthly stipends promised in the students’ loan scheme.

“NELFUND is yet to make a release to us, but we are expecting it because it has reached the level of releasing the money to the university,” Akintunde stated at a press briefing heralding the university’s 35th convocation ceremony.

The VC explained that the loan is not automatic and that students who refuse to apply will not receive the fund. “A total of 995 students applied, and that is the amount to be given to the university on their behalf,” he added.

Meanwhile, the university is set to convocate 18,825 students who will be awarded various classes of degrees and certificates. The graduating students comprise 6,269 NCE students, 11,501 degree students, and 1,055 part-time students.

Akintunde also disclosed that the university will award honorary doctorate degrees to three outstanding Nigerians, including the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who is an alumnus of the institution. “The first lady played a vital role in ensuring the transition of the school from college of education to university,” he said.

The university’s 35th convocation ceremony is scheduled to be held from Thursday to Friday with a series of activities. “By registering vulnerable pregnant women, linking them to primary health facilities, and providing free scans, tests, and emergency care, we’ve shown that systemic change is possible even in resource-limited settings,” Akintunde concluded.
