Anthony Joshua, a British-Nigerian boxer, has given an explanation for his decision to bring his son Joseph Joshua, also known as JJ, to Nigeria during the holiday season.
During a Monday visit to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun in Abeokuta, the two-time former unified world heavyweight champion expressed his desire for JJ to become acquainted with his heritage.
Joshua was joined to the meeting with the governor by his parents, son, aunt and cousins.
“Not only did I come myself it is important for this generation of children,” the 35-year-old said. “It’s not only for me or for my own selfish reasons to enjoy ‘Detty December’ it’s also for the kids to know they are sons of the soil.”
He said thanks to his family for being his “backbone” throughout the years.
Abiodun named a boxing ring in Abeokuta Stadium in Joshua Ogun’s honour and named him a sports ambassador.
Joshua stated on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in June that he would much rather his son Joseph have a career in accounting, but he also stated that he wanted him to carve out his own future.
