Why I can’t leave PDP despite crisis – Bode George

Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has promised to never leave the party.

Bode George gave an interview with NAN on Sunday in Lagos.

He was responding to the party’s leadership problem and how some old members are departing, citing internal disagreements.

George stated that the current challenges in the PDP would be overcome and that the party would grow stronger.

He stated that he passionately believed in the party’s ideology, and that no other political party had the same strong ideals or had strong internal democracy as the PDP.

“I can’t leave PDP, I can’t. Look, every other party is like a miniatured congregation of strange bed fellows.

“They do not have the principles that we have in the our party. So why would I leave reality for others? I would rather go home because I believe so much in the principles of the party.

“A rolling stone gathers no moss.If we have crisis in the party,we will stay there and resolve it,we are going nowhere,” he said.

He stated that people who left the PDP due to internal conflicts were never truly dedicated to the party.

According to George, several of the party’s heavyweights who left have subsequently understood that the PDP is the only party that practices true internal democracy.

He stated that the failure of late Chief Alex Ekwueme, a founding member, to get the party’s presidential nomination on two occasions demonstrated that the PDP was not established around individuals.

When asked if the PDP missed defected chieftains such as Mr Peter Obi and Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, George responded that the party did not miss anyone.

He claimed that the founding fathers’ altruism, commitment, and progressive politics had gone away.

The PDP chieftain stated that in order for the PDP to overcome its issues, individual interests must be subjugated under party interests.

George emphasised the need of unity and legacy-building in political leadership, noting the “exemplary conduct” of former Vice President Chief Alex Ekwueme.

According to him, Ekwueme competed with President Obasanjo and declared himself defeated.

George praised Ekwueme’s unwavering devotion to democratic values and party unity, stating, “He never, at any time, raised his hands to demonise or destroy the party.”
