Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was found guilty of terrorist charges on Thursday. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has revealed why he chose to give Kanu a life sentence rather than the death penalty.

The court stated that although Nnamdi Kanu’s punishment was death, he had to exercise mercy due to the precepts of the Holy Book.

He claims that while religious beliefs also support mercy, the death penalty is progressively being eliminated in many nations.

Justice Omotosho noted that Jesus Christ taught His disciples to be merciful, citing a section of the book of Matthew.

Noting that the Kuje Correctional Center would not fulfill the stated purpose of the punishment, Justice Omotosho also held that Kanu’s imprisonment must take place in an institution appropriate for his standing.

He mandated that the IPOB leader be taken into protective custody at any safe location within the nation.

Kanu must not have access to electronic devices unless the Office of the National Security Adviser closely monitors him, the court further decided.

The transmitter used for Kanu’s broadcasts was also ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government by the judge, who also stated that further equipment connected to the case will be seized in the absence of an appeal.
