According to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, ought to be considerate enough to notify Governor Monday Okpebholo before to his travel to Edo State.
In the midst of mounting controversy around Governor Okpebholo’s recent warning to Obi not to enter the state without prior notice, Oshiomhole made the comments on Friday during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time program.
The governor’s claim that Obi’s previous visit was connected to a security incident that reportedly claimed three lives has provoked criticism and charges of political intimidation.
Oshiomhole defended the governor’s stance, saying that it is customary and respectful for high-profile individuals to notify state authorities prior to visiting state-owned facilities.
“Let’s be clear, the assets of Edo State are managed by the governor on behalf of the people,” the former Edo State governor said. “If I were to visit a public institution in another state, I would consider it proper to notify the authorities, this is just standard decency.”
Obi intended to visit a state-funded school, according to Oshiomhole, who also pointed out that such a visit necessitates coordination with the relevant government channels.
Oshiomhole explained their political differences while admitting that he has known Obi for a long time:
“Peter Obi and I have known each other for years. I respected him then, and I still do. But we don’t align politically, and I don’t agree with many of his positions.”
He insisted that following protocol and demonstrating respect for state government mechanisms are more important than politics or party connections.
