Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) allegation that the revocation of its land title was a ruse to quell resistance.
Wike made this statement on Friday in Abuja when members of the Body of Benchers, led by Chairman Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, visited the city.
The PDP’s claim that he was ordered to cancel the party’s land title in Central Area, Abuja, in order to quell dissent shocked the former governor of Rivers State.
He clarified that every executive decision in the nation was frequently associated with political, religious, and ethnic prejudices.
He claimed that it was frequently misunderstood as a political maneuver to revoke the land titles of allottees who had neglected to pay the required ground rent for more than ten years.
While building its National Secretariat in the Central Area, Wike pointed out that the PDP had been in power for a number of years but was unable to pay the N7.6 million ground rent for its land title.
The ministry added that the PDP had failed to pay the N7.6 million ground rent despite making between N13 billion and N20 billion through from the selling of party forms.
He reaffirmed that the Wadata Plaza, which housed the PDP’s National Secretariat, was registered under an Abuja-based senator rather than the party as property.
The PDP persisted in asserting that the minister was targeting its secretariat notwithstanding the minister’s assertion that the registered owner had not paid the ground rent for 28 years.
“Maybe they had a deal with the man and did not complete the deed of assignment and were shouting oh, they sent Wike to revoke the land as a ploy to kill opposition.
“What kind of mentality is that?” Wike asked.
He emphasized that other organizations, including the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as well as individuals, had also had their land titles revoked for the same reason, demonstrating that the land revocation was not exclusive to the PDP.
Wike also cautioned that no land allottee who defaulted would be spared and asked the Body of Benchers to make sure they paid their ground rent.
According to ZINGTIE, on March 17, 2025, Wike authorized the revocation of 4,794 land titles that affected private citizens, business organizations, and governmental institutions since they had not paid ground rent for more than ten years.
