Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the Minister never claimed that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara, had wronged him on a personal level.

According to Olayinka, Fubara’s actions were considered offensive not to Wike, but to President Bola Tinubu and the individuals who played a role in his rise to the governorship.

Wike and Fubara have been entangled in a prolonged political conflict, primarily centered around influence and control within Rivers State.

This ongoing dispute spilled into the legislative arm of the state, resulting in the emergence of rival Speakers and a divided House of Assembly.

The situation escalated to the point where President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state.

As part of the federal intervention, Tinubu placed Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State Assembly on a six-month suspension, while appointing a Sole Administrator to manage the state’s affairs.

Amid the tensions, a call for reconciliation was made by former Niger Delta militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, who appealed to Wike to forgive the suspended governor.

Tompolo urged Wike to let go of his grievances toward Fubara.

However, responding to Tompolo’s plea, Olayinka said that at no point did Fubara request forgiveness from the Minister.

While addressing newsmen in Abuja, Olayinka said: “The minister has never said that Fubara offended him personally. He only said that Fubara should govern in accordance with the rule of law and that Fubara should not throw away those who risked their lives and resources and that is not too much to ask.

He said, ‘Those who worked to make you governor, don’t throw them away like that’. So, that is not about forgiveness. If there is one person Fubara would say he has offended, it should be the President.”

“You are begging a doctor to provide medicine for someone who is sick, but you are not begging the person who is sick to take the medicine. What happens?

“There is no offence. It is when somebody has offended you personally that you are talking about the person seeking forgiveness or whatever.

“As Christians, let’s not assume that Fubara has offended the minister, do you forgive someone who has not come to you to seek forgiveness?

“The person who has wronged you must first agree that in his mind he has wronged you. Let’s assume that Fubara has offended the minister, has he come to seek forgiveness? I’m not saying there is an offence and there should be forgiveness but he has not even come for forgiveness.”
