A group of women, alarmed by the deteriorating security situation in Ondo State’s Akoko area, have organized a nonviolent demonstration, during which some of them are partially clothed, to protest the heinous killings committed by suspected herdsmen.
The majority of the ladies were old, and they marched through the streets to show their displeasure with the ongoing killings, kidnappings, and damage of their farms.
Rumor has it that the demonstration happened soon after Sunday Ayeni, a farmer, was brutally killed on his property after he got into a fight with herdsmen.
A search team found Mr. Ayeni’s body and his hunting dog over the weekend. As a result of the incident, farmers have been compelled to flee their farms out of concern for other attacks.
The women demanded justice for the victims of the ongoing attacks during a security meeting in the palace of Oka’s Olubaka, Adebori Adeleye.
According to the group’s spokeswoman, Mrs. Abigail Ojo, some of the members were raped on their farms by suspected herders, and their crops were destroyed.
She claimed that they had given up on their farms and were resolved not to come back until they were adequately safe and protected.
She further said, “We cannot tolerate these senseless killings any longer. All of this has to stop.”
She made a plea to the security agencies to help in finding a lasting solution to their problem.
In response, Mr. Adeleye, the traditional ruler, stated that the appropriate security authorities were taking care of the community’s security concerns.
