The World Bank has approved a financing package of $300 million to support up to 7.4 million Nigerians in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and their host communities in Northern Nigeria. The loan, approved on August 7, 2025, aims to strengthen resilience and expand access to essential services for IDPs and host communities in the region.
According to the World Bank, the initiative has the potential to help Nigeria address development challenges associated with protracted displacement in a sustainable way. World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, expressed the organisation’s support for the initiative, saying, “We are glad to support this initiative, which has tremendous potential to help Nigeria in addressing development challenges associated with protracted displacement in a sustainable way.”
The financing is expected to provide critical support to IDPs and host communities in Northern Nigeria, who have been affected by conflict and displacement. By investing in resilience and essential services, the World Bank aims to help Nigeria address the complex development challenges associated with IDPs and promote sustainable development in the region.
