The Nasarawa State Government has launched the World Bank’s Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, aimed at improving education for girls in 490 public secondary schools across the state. The project was flagged off by Governor Abdullahi Sule in Lafia, the state capital.
“The programme is aimed at addressing the lack of completion of education by adolescent girls, particularly in secondary schools, through providing support to schools, families and communities, and also to empower girls with relevant skills for self-development,” Sule said.
The governor commended the Federal Ministry of Education for considering Nasarawa State for the School Improvement Grant and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the World Bank’s AGILE project. He appealed to school-based management committees and other stakeholders to manage resources judiciously and be transparent and accountable.
Aishatu Isoga, the Nasarawa State Project Coordinator of AGILE, explained that the project’s main focus is on adolescent girls between the ages of 10 to 20, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds who are at risk of dropping out of school. “It is worth noting that one of the key deliverables of AGILE is the School Improvement Grant, which we are flagging off today,” she said.
The project will provide grants to 515 public secondary schools across the state, with 490 schools benefiting from small and medium grants in the first phase. “This grant is a school-level funding mechanism that empowers school communities to take direct charge of their development priorities,” Isoga added.
The state Commissioner for Education, John Mamman, pledged the ministry’s commitment to ensuring the smooth take-off of the project across the 13 local government areas of the state. “We thank all the stakeholders involved in the project and pledge to work closely with them to ensure its success,” he said.
