The accusations made by Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the opposition Labour Party (LP), that he was threatened with death are “unfortunate, misleading, and outright falsehoods,” according to Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ganduje rejected Obi’s charges as “sheer mischief” and a “malicious lie” meant to win over the public and play the victim in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday evening. He said that the narrative needed to be disproved in order to stop more false information from spreading, even though such assertions may have been disregarded.

The accusations, which were posted on Obi’s verified X handle, caused Ganduje to voice his concerns. In an appearance on Arise TV on January 4, 2025, he accused the LP standard bearer of twisting statements made by Felix Morka, the national publicity secretary for the APC.

“At no point did Morka threaten Obi or his family. By falsely claiming that Morka issued threats, Mr. Obi has incited his supporters to issue death threats against Morka and his family, which is both dangerous and unwarranted,” Ganduje stated.

The APC Chairman criticised Obi for disseminating lies, stressing that the LP candidate has an obligation to ensure that his public remarks are accurate as a public person.

He stressed that it was Obi’s duty as a public figure to give correct and truthful information, adding that disseminating lies erodes public confidence.

The APC National Chairman emphasised that Morka was only doing his responsibilities as the party’s National Publicity Secretary, which include holding opposition figures responsible for their remarks as is usual in a democracy.

He added: “Morka’s comments during the interview were strictly in response to a question referencing ‘prophets of doom’ and ‘voodoo economics.’ Nothing in his statement constituted or suggested a threat to Obi or anyone else.”

Ganduje also stressed the value of free expression, a “right protected by Nigeria’s Constitution” that is equally applicable to all Nigerians, including those who belong to the ruling party.

He urged Obi to avoid spreading false information and to embrace criticism as a necessary component of democracy.

“Does Mr. Obi expect the APC to fold its arms and allow the opposition to propagate falsehoods without any response?” Ganduje queried.

He cautioned that the APC will keep presenting facts about the Tinubu-led administration to refute unfounded accusations.

Ganduje reaffirmed the party’s dedication to maintaining democratic values while, where required, holding opposition figures responsible.
