Nigeria’s military pay structure has been harshly criticized by retired Major General Rogers Nicholas, who calls it unjust and discouraging to soldiers who risk their lives for the nation. As soldiers risk death on the battlefield, the former theater commander of Operation Lafiya Dole bemoaned the pitiful N50,000 monthly salary they receive in an interview with Arise News Prime Time that aired at 6:14.
“You are paying a soldier 50,000 to go and die because that’s his salary,” Nicholas declared, adding, “Why must a man join the military for 50,000 naira a month salary when even if he’s selling pure water he can make 50,000 a month conveniently?”
When questioned about national security and the military’s continuous fight against insurgency in the northeast, especially in the states of Plateau and Borno, Nicholas made the comments. His remarks coincide with ongoing terrorist attacks on troops and rising worries about low military morale.
He maintained that Nigerians, especially those from the southeast, are deterred from joining the military by the low salary and unfavorable working conditions.
“Now you see campaigns in the newspapers that people from the southeast don’t want to join the military… it’s certainly not worth it,” he emphasized.
Online, the message has sparked intense emotions, with many people sharing Nicholas’ worries about the security personnel’s welfare and safety in Nigeria. The public has long been outraged by the problem of low military salaries, especially in view of the nation’s dire security situation.
