Because of his extended absence from legislative activity, the Zamfara State House of Assembly has declared the seat of Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South Constituency, vacant.

Following a proposal made by Majority Leader Hon. Bello Muhammad Mazawajje Tsafe and backed by Deputy Speaker Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gummi, the decision was made Tuesday during a plenary session.

This was revealed in a statement that was signed by the Zamfara State House of Assembly’s chief press secretary. Kurya Bello.

The Nigerian Constitution and the Assembly’s standing rules, which mandate that lawmakers regularly engage in legislative processes, were flagrantly broken, according to Kurya, who said that Kagara had only attended 21 of 180 sitting days.

The statement states that a number of members, including Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gummi (Gummi II), Hon. Ibrahim Garba Liman Fegin Mahe (Gusau II), Hon. Rilwanu Marafa Nagambo Anka (Anka), and Hon. Kabiru Mikailu Dangulbi (Maru South), supported the motion, highlighting the importance of maintaining legislative discipline and integrity.

“However, Hon. Halliru Abdullahi Kuturu (Zurmi East) urged the House to explore alternative disciplinary measures.

“Despite his appeal, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, announced the Assembly’s unanimous decision to declare the seat vacant, citing Sections 101 and 109(2) of the Nigerian Constitution as the basis for the action.

“The Assembly had previously constituted several committees to engage with Hon. Kagara, but all attempts to resolve the matter amicably failed,” the statement read.

In a related move, the Assembly directed its Committees on Justice and Agriculture to look into the Zamfara State Fertiliser Blending Plant’s current state and activities.

Within a month, the committees are supposed to present their findings for additional legislative action.
