The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed that the Federal Government has disbursed N22 billion as compensation to communities displaced by the 700-megawatt Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project in Niger State.
Adelabu made this disclosure during a recent meeting with the Compensation and Resettlement Committee of the Zungeru power plant in Abuja. He assured that the remaining N2.2 billion in compensation would be released to affected communities.
Initially, 133 communities were identified for compensation or resettlement at the project’s commencement. However, Adelabu noted that this number has increased to over 300.
“I am pleased that we have paid N22 billion in compensation, with N2.2 billion remaining. New claims have been presented, but we must verify them,” Adelabu stated.
He acknowledged the government’s financial constraints, emphasizing that numerous issues compete for attention. “The federal government faces funding challenges, and we must prioritize based on available revenue.”
Adelabu expressed surprise at the significant increase in communities claiming compensation. He stressed the need for verification before releasing additional compensation.
“The sudden addition of new communities requiring compensation or resettlement is surprising. We must verify these claims to ensure legitimacy,” he said.
