According to Obi Aguocha, the National Assembly member for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, elected local government chairmen in the state receive their funding straight from the federal government.

Speaking on Thursday’s political program of FLO FM Umuahia, Aguocha stated that the administration of Governor Alex Otti has adhered to the principle of local government autonomy by guaranteeing that the councils have the financial capacity to conduct their activities independently.

The member of the House of Representatives for the Labour Party urged any of the 17 chairmen of local governments who contend that their councils are not getting enough funding to speak up.

“If there is any local government chairman who thinks or believes otherwise, then they should come out and tell us,” Aguocha said.

Furthermore, he stated that until the local government leaders themselves come up to verify it, any conjecture regarding actual autonomy in local government finance cannot be believed.
