The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chapter in Abia State has denounced Rowland Dennis Chinwendu’s intention to defect from the party and join the Labour Party (LP) in order to represent the Isiala Ngwa South seat.
On Tuesday, the Abia State House of Assembly floor revealed Chinwendu’s defection, following a few days of speculation that he was considering leaving the PDP.
The PDP responded to the news by announcing that it will promptly write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, to declare the lawmaker’s position vacant.
PDP Publicity Secretary in Abia Eric Ikwuagwu released a statement Tuesday night in which the party called Chinwendu’s defection “unethical and unconstitutional.”
Ikwuagwu asserts that Section 68(1)(g) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) Constitution expressly states that unless there is a definite split or merger within the original party, any member of a legislative house who defected from the party on whose platform they were elected must resign from their position.
He clarified that the Abia PDP does not currently have any divisions or mergers.
The party further said that it will “institute immediate legal proceedings in a court of competent jurisdiction to ensure that the constitutional provisions protecting the integrity of our democratic system are strictly upheld.”
