In an effort to prevent a breakdown of peace and order in the state, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has instructed the recently elected local government chairmen to refrain from visiting local government council secretariats.
Noting that his government is improving the state, Adeleke also urged the officials to operate within the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) platform.
At the Osun State Government House on Sunday, the governor gave the orders to the thirty local government chairmen and vice-chairmen while administering the oath of office and allegiance.
Speaking to the just sworn-in local government representatives, Adeleke said the event is the fruition of the state’s citizens’ long-term efforts.
“I call on you to be agents of change, community developers or providers of the dividends of democracy.
“We will not fail you. People’s welfare will continue to be our watchword,” Adeleke said.
He praised state officials and security agencies for making the process a success and expressed gratitude to the Osun Electoral Commission.
Adeleke also thanked President Bola Tinubu for keeping Osun State from devolving into anarchy.
“I assure Mr President of my commitment to the rule of law,” he said.
Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, also spoke to the recently sworn-in local government officials, congratulating them and reminding them of their campaign pledges.
“This is an opportunity for you to deliver to the grassroots. This will be your stepping stone to higher positions and the reward for hardwork is more opportunities.”
Makinde, who expressed shock at the violence that erupted in the state on Monday, February 17, 2025, said he was compelled to come and issue a warning in order to avoid a recurrence of the past.
“We don’t want ‘wild wild West’ again. They should stay away from this zone. We want to peacefully provide the dividend of democracy to the people.
“They should not resort to self help even if there is a court judgment. They should not think because they have federal might, this is a federal arrangement. I will stop here.”
Earlier, the elected chairmen received Certificates of Return from Barrister Hashim Abioye, the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC.
03/26 526 In addition to congratulating the elected chairmen on their win, the OSSIEC chairman urged them to serve the people and represent democracy well.
The PDP’s nominees were declared the winners of the state’s 30 local government chairmanship posts and 332 council seats by OSSIEC on Saturday.
