Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen explained his choice to let captain William Troost-Ekong take a penalty during Nigeria’s victory over Ivory Coast on Thursday in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Osimhen was fouled in the box during the match, and he was awarded a penalty.
The attacker from Napoli, the top penalty taker for the Super Eagles, was widely anticipated to take the spot kick against the home team.
But Troost-Ekong was the one to step up and score the spot-kick, giving the Super Eagles the victory over Ivory Coast 1-0.
At the press conference following the game, Osimhen was questioned about whether head coach Jose Peseiro gave the order to enable Troost-Ekong to take the penalty against Ivory Coast.
It was the instructor. He asked me to accept it, but as the captain, I have to show respect for that.
“I don’t really care who gets the team’s first goal or who gets the penalty. I want the group to triumph. This is the most essential thing to me because I want the team to succeed.
Now, Osimhen will look to lead Nigeria to victory in their last Group A match on Monday against Guinea-Bissau.
