Sam Jordan was still in shock at the death of his beautiful wife, Jenny, in a terrible car accident. Three years prior, Jenny had passed tragically, leaving Sam to raise their young daughter Mia, then two, by himself.
With Mia’s and his own anguish to contend with, Sam’s life had turned into a nightmare. It took him more than three years to feel that he and Mia had settled into something approaching a “normal” life. That’s when he made the decision to take Mia on a vacation.
Sam thought it would be nice to take a two-week vacation to sunny California instead of their hometown in Colorado. He discovered a charming bed and breakfast in Venice Beach, near the water, a vibrant and exciting place Mia would love.
The father and daughter immediately became used to the slow pace of vacation land and established a daily schedule that included visiting the beach in the morning, eating lunch, and then touring in the afternoon.
Then, one afternoon, an amazing thing occurred. “Daddy, it’s MOMMY!” exclaimed the now five-year-old as Sam and Mia pulled over for ice cream. Mia vanished in an instant, navigating her way past the crowds on the walkway.
After dropping the ice cream, Sam chased after Mia, eventually catching up to her at a distance of 100 meters. “Mia, you know you can’t run away from daddy,” he exclaimed.
But daddy, it’s mommy!” Mia exclaimed breathlessly, “She’s right there!” And Mia pointed towards a couple who were observing some handicrafts from a little farther away.
Sam sprang up abruptly and grasped Mia’s small hands. “You know your mother has gone to heaven, honey?”
But Mia obstinately shook her head. “No daddy, I recognized mommy from the picture on my wall. That’s mommy!” Just as Sam was going to clarify that Jenny had left, the woman Mia had indicated turned around.
The heart is aware of its proper place.
It seemed as though someone had punched all the air out of Sam’s body. Jenny was the one! Maybe her identical twin! Sam stood up and walked over to meet the woman, grabbing Mia by the hand.
Mia released her hold and threw her arms around the woman’s waist as they got to within a few feet of each other. “Mommy!” she cried. “Oh mommy! I knew it was you!”
The woman scowled as she looked down at Mia and then up at Sam, her beautiful features flashing with confusion. The man next to Sam turned around just as she was going to apologise.
It was Clive. He hadn’t seen his best friend Clive since Jenny’s funeral. “Clive,” he sobbed. “You wouldn’t believe it, man.” However, there was clearly a problem when Clive grabbed the arm of the woman who appeared to be Jenny out of fear.
“We must depart!” he exclaimed.
The woman, who appeared to be Jenny, expressed amazement. “What’s the matter, Sam?” she enquired of Clive. Sam? Did she believe Clive was SAM? With a heavy palm, Sam moved closer to place it on Clive’s shoulder.
“What’s going on here, Clive? Who is this…lady?” He asked.
The woman with Jenny’s appearance grinned. She said, “I’m Sam’s wife.” “My name is Jenny.”
With her arms still wrapped around the woman’s waist, Mia let out a triumphant cry. “Look, dad—this is mommy!”
The woman softly touched Mia’s face and said, “Mommy?” “I wish I were!” I’ve always desired a young female.I planned to give her a call.Mia.
The child exclaimed, “I’m Mia!” “And THAT is my dad, and you’re my mommy!”
Clive was struggling to wriggle out of Sam’s tight grip, but he was as pale as death. “It’s not what you believe,” he exclaimed. “That just happened; I didn’t plan it.”
“What happened?” Sam asked.
Following the accident…You know the car was so burned… We had the funeral…” said Clive. “Then one night I was watching a late-night missing persons show and they showed the photo of a woman who’d been found. It was Jenny! She’d had some kind of brain injury…She didn’t remember who she was, but doctors thought from the injuries and the burns she’d been in a bad crash. Then I remembered how Jenny was always picking up those young girls who hitchhiked… I guess that’s who died in the car, and Jenny was thrown clear.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?” cried Sam angrily, “Mia and I were mourning her, we were in such pain!”
Clive couldn’t look Sam in the eyes. “I loved Jenny. You knew it when you started dating her. You TOOK her from me, so I took her back…”
Jenny was listening to this in horrified silence. “You…You told me you were my husband,” she gasped. “You said my dreams about a baby girl were fantasy…YOU LIED TO ME!”
Sam calmly called police on 911 while Clive winced from her rage. Subsequently, he took a seat with Jenny and Mia and began organising the chaos that one man’s obsession had caused in their life.
Sam told Mia that her mother will likely take a while to recall everything and asked Jenny to exercise patience as well. Jenny simply smiled.
“These three years I always felt that something was WRONG. Sam — I mean Clive — told me I loved him, that he was my husband, but something wasn’t…right.” She reached for Sam and Mia’s hands. “Now it feels as if the world is finally coming right again!”
