Following reports of gunmen in the early hours of Monday, tension has descended on the Benue State town of Yelwata.
According to witnesses, local ladies protested the fresh attack by taking to the streets and calling for the withdrawal of soldiers stationed nearby to their barracks.
The irate locals insisted that they no longer feel safe in the neighborhood and demanded that they be taken to Makurdi right away.
“They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one protester said.
The incident comes just two months after 200 people, including internally displaced people, were massacred by gunmen who stormed the town on June 13 and were thought to be herders. Many of them were burned alive during the night of ruthless brutality.
