The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Sunday that Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election held the previous day, August 16, 2025.
The commission also declared Barrister Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, from the well-known Ikpeazu family in Onitsha, the victor of the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency bye-election.
Nwachukwu secured 90,408 votes, defeating Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who obtained 19,812 votes, and Donald Amamgbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who garnered 2,889 votes.
The senatorial election, which featured candidates from 16 political parties, was held to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Ubah, first elected in 2019 under the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and re-elected in 2023, later switched allegiance to the APC before passing away in 2024.
A former President-General of Ukpor, Nwachukwu is set to become the first politician from Nnewi South Local Government Area to hold the senatorial seat once sworn in.
For the Onitsha North I State Constituency, Barrister Ifeoma Mimi Azikiwe was declared the winner of the bye-election conducted on Saturday.
Professor Ibiam Ekpe of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, the Returning Officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announced that Azikiwe received 7,774 votes, defeating Mrs. Justina Azuka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who polled 1,909 votes.
Justina Azuka is the widow of the late lawmaker who represented the constituency before being kidnapped on Christmas Eve 2024. His remains were discovered near the Second Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025.
Other contenders included Mr. Ezennia Chuka Ojekwe of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who got 1,371 votes, and Ms. Njideka Ndiwe of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who scored 655 votes.
The recent bye-election is viewed as a precursor to the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8 in the state.
