The Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s red cap, which President Joe Biden donned in the run-up to the US presidential election, caused controversy.
Biden attended an event honouring the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks while wearing the Make America Great Again, MAGA, cap.
Videos from the president’s Wednesday visit to firemen in Pennsylvania, close to the scene of one of the four hijacked plane crashes, showed him chatting amicably with a Trump supporter before they switched hats.
In the video, Biden says he would autograph a hat bearing the presidential seal to a Trump fan wearing a campaign cap.
The man then requests that Biden sign it with his name on it.
With a light-hearted reply, Biden said “I don’t remember my name, I’m slow.”
The crowd cheers as Biden gives the man the autographed cap and offers to trade it for the Trump hat after they argue about his age. Biden then dons the hat for a short while.
Social media users responded to the action right once, with Trump’s campaign praising Biden for his “support”.
However, according to a White House statement, Biden’s action was meant to highlight the day’s uniting theme.
According to Andrew Bates, the deputy press secretary for the White House, “As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap.”
