On Monday, Chad will hold a presidential election with the goal of bringing democracy to the country after three years of military rule. 

Rumour has it that the front-runner among the ten contenders is General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who overthrew the government in 2021, suspended the constitution, and appointed himself president of the Transitional Military Council.

After his father, who had repressively ruled Chad since 1990, passed away from injuries he received while visiting troops fighting rebels in the north, the 40-year-old took over as the country’s leader.

Further information revealed that since gaining independence from France in 1960, the nation of almost 19 million people has never had a peaceful handover of power.

Déby declared that he would only serve as interim president while Chad moved towards a new democratic administration.

However, he has put an end to opposition protests, raising doubts about the fairness of the election among both observers and voters.
