As directed by President Donald Trump, the Chicago Police Department has stated that it will not support the looming deportations by US Immigration.
The statement was released on Monday, a day after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson reaffirmed his commitment to opposing Trump’s comprehensive reform.
Trump has promised to implement nationwide border security measures.
Trump also issued an executive order in that regard when he returned to the White House on Monday.
However, Chicago officials vowed not to cooperate with Trump’s request to return illegal immigrants to their home nations.
According to Chicago police, the department does not keep track of people’s immigration status or provide data to federal authorities.
“To be clear, the Chicago Police Department will not assist or intervene in civil immigration enforcement in accordance with the City of Chicago Municipal Code,” the police department’s statement read.
“As always, we will continue to enforce the law if a crime occurs, regardless of the citizenship status of those involved.”
