The Federal Government has ordered that Nigerians whose passports have expired and who intend to visit their nation to celebrate the holiday be permitted entry without any hindrance.
Through the Office of Assistant Comptroller General, Border Management, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, or NIS, Wura-Ola Adepoju, demanded in a letter dated December 22, 2023, that Nigerians “be admitted into the country with their expired Nigerian passports.” The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, received the letter.
“l am directed to refer to the above subject matter and to inform you that the Federal Government of Nigeria, in its efforts to make life easy for Nigerians in the diaspora, has approved that all Nigerians returning home can be admitted into the country with their expired Nigerian passports.
“I am further directed to inform airlines coming to Nigeria to allow holders of Nigerian expired passports to board without let.”
Alkasim Abdulkadir, the minister of foreign affairs’ media assistant, was absent from the office and could not acknowledge receipt of the letter.
The letter’s validity could not be verified when this story was published because Dotun Aridegbe, the NIS spokesperson, could not be reached.
Nonetheless, a trustworthy NIS source who requested anonymity attested that the strategy was not new, as the Federal Government had implemented a similar measure the previous year.
