While residents of Plateau State are still grappling with the aftermath of the recent violence in parts of Bokkos Local Government Area, another tragedy struck on Sunday night, as two villages in Bassa LGA came under attack, resulting in the deaths of 47 individuals and leaving many others injured.

Reports indicate that the affected villages were Zike and Kimakpa, located in the Kwall District of Irigwe Chiefdom within the same local government area.

More than two weeks ago, a similar wave of violence in Bokkos LGA led to the deaths of over 50 people and widespread destruction, prompting outrage both within the state and nationwide.

In response, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, along with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and DIG B.D. Kwazhi, paid visits to Plateau State in an effort to bring an end to the bloodshed.

Unfortunately, even as violence continued in Bokkos, scattered attacks were also being reported in Irigwe Chiefdom.

Despite high-level visits and meetings involving key stakeholders, the violence appears to have shifted its focus to the Irigwe area in Bassa LGA.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, along with former military administrator Rear Admiral Bitrus Atukum (rtd), suggested that the violence may be part of a broader attempt to displace the local population and take over their ancestral lands.

The Sunday night incident has left the affected communities reeling in pain, fear, and sorrow, with survivors recounting harrowing experiences.

The Secretary-General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Dickson Auta, confirmed the attack and stated that 47 bodies had been recovered so far.

He said, “An attack on Zike and Kimakpa communities in Kwall District of Irigwe Chiefdom in Bassa LGA resulted in 47 confirmed deaths, with many injured.”

“The scale of this attack suggests a well-planned and coordinated assault on the communities,” he decried.

At the time this report was compiled, neither the Plateau State Police Command nor Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) had issued an official response concerning the recent attacks.
