There are messages on Facebook stating that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently incarcerated, has escaped from the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
Despite his many court appearances, the Nigerian government has not yet released him from custody or granted him freedom for his purported crimes against the nation.
The post reads: “Breaking news: Nnamdi Kanu escapes from DSS custody with case file.
“According to reliable sources, Kanu’s escape was executed with meticulous planning and precision, catching the authorities off guard. Details surrounding the escape remain murky, with speculation ranging from insider assistance to external support.”
However, has the leader of IPOB really escaped from DSS custody? Africa Check, a fact-checking website, conducted research.
The media outlet claimed that if Kanu had been able to get out of jail, it would have made headlines after being thoroughly examined. No reliable media source covered the escape mentioned above.
Thus, it declared the assertion to be “false”.
