Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chief in Osun State, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s request to the Senate to terminate the appointments of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for alleged gross misconduct in the 2023 general elections.
The suspended Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) RECs were Ike Uzochukwu of Abia State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari of Adamawa State, and Nura Ali of Sokoto State.
Oyintiloye said the removal of the RECs was a clear indication of the President’s determination to clean up the country’s electoral system.
The APC chieftain revealed this in an interview with journalists in Osogbo on Sunday. He also praised the Senate for granted the president’s plea to remove the suspended RECs.
Former MP Oyintiloye stated the President’s request to the Senate to remove the affected RECs, and the Red Chamber’s subsequent confirmation, was a significant step towards electoral reforms.
He stated that the dismissal of the RECs would serve as a clear reminder to others that bribery and corruption would not be tolerated in the country’s electoral system.
Oyintiloye stated that sacking the suspended RECs would restore trust in the country’s electoral processes while also ensuring accountability.
“I want to commend the president for the bold step to terminate the appointments of the suspended RECs.
“That is an indication that the President is keen to give the country a free, fair and credible election that Nigerians will be proud of.
“The suspension and termination of the appointments of the three RECs; Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto) will serve as a deterrent to other RECs who have similar traits of corruption in them.
“The President has promised to fight corruption and this will serve as a lesson to other public servants that the country is moving forward,” he said.
Oyintiloye also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for imposing disciplinary punishment of suspension on the RECs in March 2023.
The APC leader reminded that Yunusa-Ari was suspended for illegally usurping the Returning Officer’s job in the 2023 Adamawa governorship election and making an unauthorised declaration of results.
He stated Ali and Uzochukwu were suspended for neglect of duty, with Ali also facing bribery charges.
Oyintiloye also praised INEC for convicting Prof. Ignatius Udok for election fraud, saying it “demonstrates the commission’s commitment to electoral integrity.”
He stated that the punishment of Udok, the Collation /Returning Officer for the Essien Udim State Constituency seat in the 2019 general election, by an Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo, was a clear indication that the country’s electrical reform is progressing.
Oyintiloye, on the other hand, urged President Tinubu to continue fighting corruption, noting that the struggle has begun to generate beneficial outcomes.
