As reported by the Daily Trust Newspaper on Sunday, April 13, Tapgun, a well-known member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a former governor of Plateau State, has provided insight into the internal disputes within the party, with a particular emphasis on Nyesom Wike’s dissatisfaction with its leadership.
In a recent interview, Tapgun stated, “Wike has been a pillar for the PDP, providing financial support for years. His disappointment stems from feeling sidelined in critical decisions.”
Tapgun recalled the crucial convention in Port Harcourt, which turned into a hot spot for party strife. “Initially, there was a consensus to hold the convention in Abuja,” he explained.
“However, Wike’s insistence on Port Harcourt was not just about location; it was a strategic maneuver to position himself for the vice presidential ticket.”
Wike expected Aminu Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto State, to win the PDP presidential ticket. Wike wanted to demonstrate his might and establish himself as Tambuwal’s possible running mate by holding the convention in his stronghold. “He believed this was his moment to shine,” Tapgun noted.
Wike’s discontent increased during the election process, especially after Atiku Abubakar was selected as the party’s presidential candidate. “Wike had invested so much into the party, both financially and strategically. When Atiku opted for Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate, it was a turning point, Wike felt betrayed, and that betrayal ignited his opposition to the party leadership.” Tapgun remarked.
Tapgun underlined that Wike had made substantial financial contributions to the PDP, supporting a number of campaigns and court cases. “His commitment to the party was unwavering, but the lack of recognition for his efforts led to his current stance,” he concluded.
