Chika Nwoba, a former PDP spokesperson in Ebonyi, has been placed under detention in a correctional facility on charges of defamation by an Abakaliki magistrate’s court.

Social media handler Nwoba is accused of three counts of conspiracy, false publication, and defamation. He appeared in court on Tuesday.

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Oguzor Offia-Nwali, filed a petition, which led to the defendant’s detention on Sunday, February 11, 2024, according to the prosecution, ASP Chinagorom Eze, who testified in court.

On February 6 at Abakaliki, Nwoba Chika and other individuals who are currently at large conspired to commit a felony, specifically “publishing false information, and thwarting life, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516(a) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009,” according to the prosecutor.

Nwoba’s attorney, Mr. C.N. Ufufu, submitted a bail application claiming that the offenses qualified for bail on bond.

On the other hand, the prosecution rejected the bail request.

Referring the matter to the high court, magistrate Mrs. Lilian Ogodo declared that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

The case was adjourned until March 1, 2024, by Ogodo.
