A 27-year-old dispatch rider named Magaji Adamu was arrested by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command for reportedly delivering several cartons of nitrous oxide, also referred to as “laughing gas,” which is thought to have been meant for illicit use.

SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, made this announcement in a statement on Thursday.

The statement claims that on January 20, 2024, Adamu, a graduate of Gidan Waya College of Education in Kafanchan, Kaduna, was captured while on a regular patrol in the area.

The suspect acknowledged during questioning that since December 2023, he has been employed as a dispatch rider for the logistics platform Gonymble.

Josephine said the suspect said this was the fourth time he had delivered the substance, and that a man identified simply as Mr Danladi had always given it to him.

According to Adamu, Mr. Danladi would give him instructions over the phone to pick up the parcels and transport them to a police station in Jabi, Abuja.

He added that each delivery got him N5,000.

Adamu, who stated he had just moved to Abuja, said he didn’t know at first what the gas was because Danladi informed him it was used in hospitals.

ZINGTIE remembers that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ordered a statewide crackdown on the illicit selling and abuse of nitrous oxide on July 11, 2023.

It directed law enforcement to move quickly to stop its distribution as worries about its recreational use and related health hazards grew.

Following controversy sparked by a widely shared image of a Nigerian rapper holding a balloon on social media, the instruction was issued.

Many internet users conjectured that the picture showed the usage of laughing gas, which is becoming common among youth.

Commonly used for food processing and medical sedative, nitrous oxide can cause short-term euphoria, giggling, hallucinations, and dizziness when inhaled.

Long-term misuse, however, can result in major health hazards, such as heart problems, oxygen deprivation, depression, memory loss, and nerve damage.
